Witness one of nature’s great seasonal events as the alewife fish make their annual journey upstream. At the Maine Forest and Logging Museum, we celebrate this migration with a day full of history, hands-on activities, and family-friendly fun.
Traditional Fish Smoking
Step back in time and take part in an age-old tradition. Watch as freshly caught alewives are prepared and smoked in our historic smokehouse, just as Maine’s early settlers once did. Learn about the importance of this practice and even lend a hand in the process!
Family Fun & Games
Alewife Day isn’t just about fish—it’s a day for the whole family! Kids can enjoy classic outdoor games and activities while exploring the museum grounds. From interactive exhibits to hands-on learning, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.
Living History in Action
History comes to life as our mills, blacksmith shop, and historic buildings open their doors for demonstrations. See the sights, hear the sounds, and experience the craftsmanship that defined Maine’s logging and forestry industries.
Come for the fish, stay for the fun! Admission is by donation, so bring the whole family and experience a true piece of Maine’s heritage.
